We now have a new system in place for throttling scrapers and other abusive systems.
This site is for users, not for robots and other annoyances to abuse.

This is still beta however, so if we throttle you by mistake, please let us know.

We expect this to make the site much faster once all the abusive scripts/bots are gone.

what do you mean "throttled"? bt-chat is not an ISP so you have never
had the possibility to throttle anyone's speed.

and as far as i'm aware, bt-chat doesn't even have it's own tracker url
so how would you go about throttling or blocking someone from downloading
a file, not a torrent file?

either you're using the wrong terminology, or else i've never heard about throttling scrapers
or scrapes. i'm only familiar with the term "throttling" as it pertains to ISPs throttling speeds.

please explain. thanks.

Not speed throttling, there is no limit to how fast the pages flow.

The limit is for the number of pages viewed/torrents downloaded per minute.
This is to keep bots from killing our resources.
Per example, download is set to 30/min, which I can't see a user hitting,
that'd mean clicking one torrent per 2s, and downloading 30 torrents.

Users shouldn't even notice this, but bots should find it quite annoying.

I think 10/min would be plenty. That's one per 6sec. Download takes 3 to 5 sec minimum due to http overhead. The "build-a-site" bots may be able to adjust for 30/min.

For those wondering why any bot would download that many torrents it the advert/spyware/spamware based "auto-torrent" sites that do it. If you google "[your favorite show] torrent" you'll note that the top 10 or 15 links are sites with seemingly random names saying they have the torrent you're looking for. When you click the link the first 50 to 75% of the web page is full of "FULL SPEED SAFE DOWNLOAD HERE!" links. Any valid torrent files they may have for download were ripped from other sites, not uploaded by trusted users.

the website thinks i'm a bot and i keep getting throttled.

i try waiting a few secs after each dl or refresh and it still happens.

it also happens when i try to upload.

There is no throttle on upload.
I did change the way RBL checks work so that could be it if you're using a proxy.
Scrapers using the same proxy that you're using = fail.

Hrm.
Re d/l, how many are you grabbing. It's set to 4 per min.

i don't use a proxy. but it's better today. haven't got throttled yet, and
i haven't changed the way i use the website.

for example, i sometimes open several info pages to read the file info,
tracker info and torrent contents, and that's when i got throttled.

i don't know why i was throttled on uploading.

i'm getting throttled again. all i did was open a few pages to look at the file details and info and i got the message.

i waited a few minutes and the message still comes up.

I've modded the throttle again. It is incremental so less time for first throttle.
If you get throttled, wait at least 10 seconds.
If you try again while throttled it will assume you didn't read it and are a bot.

I'll add the captcha soon so you simply prove you are not a bot.

well it hasn't happened since my last post above.

but why a captcha? i don't think it's needed and i think it's
a big bother. can't you put the captcha on non-mods/admins/verifieds
as you've done for logon, where we don't have to use it if we aren't in
any of those groups?

The Throttle is before any sort of auth check.
The whole purpose is to prevent DB abuse.
If I do a auth check then that is a DB hit, which means we're back to the same problems.

The solution is to fetch db stuffs one shot and keep them for a while.
That will take quite a bit of rewriting of the site code.

The next major update should include some form of local cache for login credentials.

I'm having a problem with this because of the method i use BT-Chat.

BT-Chat is one of the trackers linked to by EZTV, and it always opens a new window. So in an attempt to load as many trackers onto my torrents as fast as possible, i usually CTRL-click all the tracker links on the page. That means as I download several TV shows at a time, i've probably opened several BT-Chat windows so i can add the trackers. Which means i get flagged as a bot.

What if instead of flagging me as a bot, you just queued up each page i had open so that the servers process one page at a time? That way there is still a delay between each download and I don't end up downloading too many torrents at a time?

There is no way we can control how many pages you open.

You must be opening a lot of them.
I have tried to manually trip the throttle by clicking through pages fast and I can not, so I don't know how you are.
Perhaps some script that loads all links on the page could do it, but that is bot-like activity.

Check you aren't running any plugs that may be scanning the pages as well.

Yeah it's possible to do with FF and middle clicking on a list of torrents with (in my case) the middle mouse button to open the link in a new tab. I wanted to have all the parts of the series in a tab each so I could then go along and queue each up for download. It's triggered the throttle when I do that! :) I see the point, though sometimes normal behaviour can run across it.

I'm guessing that's why I'm not getting any downloads from the tracker. My client keeps telling me there are no seeds, even though these are pretty recent torrents that I got thru EZTV, and off of BT-Chat directly. Anyway to fix this?

Throttle has no effect once you've downloaded.
We also don't host the tracker.

Check DHT is enabled, it may help if the tracker is having issues.

i'm logged into the site, I try to click the eztv link.
it tells me I'm a bot.

I wait 10 seconds, and then hit back in the browser window. I wait 10 seconds more.
I hit the eztv l;ink to browse by eztv selections, and I get told I'm a bot again!

I'd rather just deal with a captcha link after login to reverify me gain, then this. The site has become unusuable.

I now have waited 40 seconds while typing this. Again, it thinks I'm a bot!!

Ok, I just got the I've been bad in my torrent file.

"Slow down! You appear to be a bot. Wait a minute and try again. Or try reaching us on irc for details"

I am working on PC app that automatically downloads the torrent file from a rss feed link from here and it is working except I get a few .torrent files with your bot-o-gram :/

Now I don't mind putting in a wait statement in to limit how fast my app gets the torrent files that I don't already have but I need to know the safe limit on how often to follow link to get torrent file.

Mahalo,

Jaz

I got the throttled screen a few times coming from a link in eztv's rss feed through Google Reader. I tried multiple times before finally it seemed to work.

Allot of us that are getting redirected from ezrss.it use pytvshows. It seems that the throttle system causes 2 problems. The first is that it thing those of us using pytvshows are bots. Also we are getting the html response as a torrent file. Its kinda really messing up the automation that was achieved with pytvshows. Is there any way to make the bot detection less broad?

http://code.google.com/p/pytvshows-plus/

Thanks

I got throttled as well. Last time I went to the doctor he didn't mention my being a bot, so as far as I'm aware I'm not one.

This is every 6 seconds. Download requires a minimum of 3-5 seconds, due to an HTTP overhead. May establish a site, the robot can adjust 30/min.

Are you searching via the site or some kind of 3rd party plugin?

We are currently getting pounded by some torrent client abusing us or some site doing same,
so throttle will be less tolerant. We are working on removing the offender, then things should get back to normal.

I just got nailed for it. I logged in, typed in the torrent my fiancee wanted and I got an error saying there were too many redirects and it told me to reload. So I reloaded, then it throttled me O.o

*EDIT* After posting this I attempted to search again. Simply clicked the search button above, didn't type in anything to search and it nailed me again. Even after waiting easily 2-3 minutes between typing out my first post and then attempting to research the torrent.
